Dr. Squirrels New Year Health Tips

This time of year we think of New Year’s resolutions and while few go unbroken, making them is a good start in improving health. If you don’t want to make a formal list to yourself, the beginning of a new year is a good time to look at ourselves and consider beneficial changes that we could accomplish. For some of us, making a personal mission statement regarding areas we would like to improve is more effective than resolutions. Look at what would most fulfill you and make you happy! The key is to have fun and enjoy a healthy life.

A Harvard study made a list of 7 resolutions for a healthier and longer life that you may want to consider for the new year:

1.) Floss every night. In a recent study, people who flossed nightly had a 30% lower risk of dying within a decade. 2.) Walk 30 minutes a day. One of the most efficient ways to reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, dementia, diabetes, and colon cancer. 3.) Learn something new. Becoming a perpetual student may help to preserve your memory. 4.) Eat better. A healthful diet will reduce our risk of most major diseases. No trans fats, 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily, protein from fish, poultry, and beans. 5.) Make new friends. Expanding your social connections can reduce the risk of heart disease and dementia. 6.) Lose weight if you need to. Excess weight is associated with breast cancer, stroke, heart disease, and diabetes. Goal is a BMI of 25 and a waistline under 35 inches. 7.) Stop smoking. This ranks at the top of practices that are most likely to harm your health.

Best ways to keep your bones healthy and strong: Calcium,Vitamin D, and Weight-bearing activity.

Weight bearing activity includes anything that gets you off your feet- i.e. walking. Exercise of the month: Standing calf raises. Stand with your feet flat on the floor. Hold the back of a chair for balance. Raise yourself on tiptoe as high as possible. Goal is 8- 12 repetitions. Rest and repeat the set.

Winter’s chill takes a notorious toll on our skin! The cold and the heat in our homes are both very drying for our skin. It’s important to use a lotion for our body and a good facial skin regimen to maintain our beautiful skin. We recommend Jan Marin skin care because it is both excellent and the cost is reasonable. However, there are other facial products that are good. What is important is to remember to use your skin care choice every day!

“Modern femininity—an irresistible combination of grace, strength and independence of spirit.”
