The Doc is in…Stroke Risks in Women

WELLNESS:

In February 2014, the American Heart Association released the first ever guidelines of stroke prevention in women. Stroke is the number 3 cause of death in women . Many women are unfamiliar with the risks and the warning signs of stroke. Our risk for stroke is higher than it is for men, in part because women live longer. Women in their 20’s and 30’s should keep an eye on their risk factors as well as older women. The risk factors include obesity, migraines with aura, atrial fibrillation, depression, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. Hypertension being one of stroke’s most powerfully documented forerunners and one that is readily treated in women. The warning signs of stroke include sudden weakness/numbness of face or limb on one side, loss of speech or trouble understanding speech, sudden severe headache, unexplained dizziness and sudden dimness/loss of vision. Every year, about 795,000 strokes occur in the United States, and roughly 53% of them are women. Of the 128,842 stroke-related deaths that occurred in 2009 in the United States, 60% of the victims were female. More public awareness campaigns on stroke and more education on the warning signs are needed so that everyone is aware.

FITNESS:

The fast way to improve heart and muscle fitness is to climb stairs. Stair climbing burns twice the calories of walking. It strengthens our heart, lungs, and muscles. With a doctor’s OK, begin slowly, and keep an even pace. Stair climbing has become so popular as an exercise it is now considered a sport. Check out www.climbamerica.org.
